Security Alert: What You Need to Know About BlueKeep

Affected Systems: Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008

There is a serious security exploit vulnerability known as BlueKeep. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would need to send a specially-crafted request to the target system’s Remote Desktop Service via RDP.

First reported in May, this vulnerability gives attackers the chance to connect to Remote Desktop Protocol services and issue commands which could steal or modify data, install malware and conduct other malicious activities. The risk is so great, Microsoft issued a patch for Windows operating systems (which have now been deemed unsupported).

BlueKeep affects computers running:

  • Windows XP
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2003
  • Windows Server 2008

What is important to know is that security experts remain concerned the exploit could be used for anything from installing Trojan malware for stealthy attacks to deploying ransomware on compromised systems – or even just wiping out entire networks. The way we here at DMS iTech see it, BlueKeep would be especially useful to attackers who only care about infecting as many machines as possible with no preference so far as victims go.

What’s worse, this vulnerability requires no user interaction, enabling an attacker who successfully exploited it to execute arbitrary code on the target system. This means such an individual – or individuals – could then install programs; view, change or delete data or create new accounts with full user rights.

We don’t want you to be one of those victims.

Contact DMS iTech immediately if you think you’re at risk

We’re here to ensure BlueKeep is kept far from your operating systems, and we accomplish this through patches to platforms now considered unsupported by Microsoft, such as Windows XP Professional (and others, if required). The patch process takes approximately five minutes per unit, with an additional half-hour of setup.

In order to identify if you are at risk, DMS iTech would run a script within your environment to identify if any of your workstations may be at risk of being exploited by the vulnerability – this will take approximately 1 hour to complete. If we find that you are running operating systems that are susceptible to the BlueKeep exploit, we can also assist with applying a security patch on the identified workstations. To apply the security patch will take approximately ½ hour of set-up time, and 5 minutes per workstation to apply.

Contact us today if you would like DMS iTech to apply the appropriate anti-BlueKeep patch to your system.
